Designer Bookmark Bar
I know that many of you hate the bookmark bar in R5 and R6, but I make use of it. I make more use of it in designer, where I group the design of applications I support. Instead of trying to find that database on my workspace in the client and then opening it in designer, I go directly to my designer and find the bookmark.

Well, the other day I accidentally deleted the default blank space between the standard links (client and administrator) and my first folder. See figure 1. I don't know how I did it, but it kinda bummed me out. I don't know why, but I liked seeing that little gap there (as can be seen in figure 2). So I spent a few minutes trying to figure out how the bookmarks database works. Here's what I found.

There are folders in the bookmark database (bookmark.nsf) that hold the contents of each bookmark folder. If you open up any of those folders in the client you'll see the bookmarks. The folders that are specifically for the designer client start out with ($Design). For example, I have a folder called ($Design)\Mail Scheduler for all the mail scheduler templates.

But that's only the folders. The actual bookmark bar that appears in your client or designer is really an outline. There's an outline called "DesignBookmarkOrder" that shows the entries in the bookmark bar. (There's one called "UserBookmarkOrder" for the Notes client and "AdminBookmarkOrder" for the Administrator client). In that outline you can add an "Untitled" entry to add back a space between the last standard entry and the first custom folder (see figure 3). So that's what I did, and I ended up with the designer bookmark bar you see in figure 2. Not a big deal, but my comfort level is back up now that the "gap" is back, and it didn't take me too long to figure it out.
